Consumer Safety Panel Weakened

News that shower curtains might make people sick is alerting consumers to the problem of toxins in plastics. A recent report by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice found that some curtains –- sold at major chain stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, K-mart, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart -– contain high concentrations of toxic chemicals like phthalates. These have been linked to reproductive defects and developmental problems in infants.

Two identical bills were introduced in the United States Senate and House, House Bill (H.R. 6100) and Senate Bill (S.B. 3040), both identifiable through the title “Kid Safe Chemicals Act of 2008.”

Strong reforms needed for toy safety

More than 46 million toys and children's products were recalled in 2007. Toys posing choking hazards, the risk of acute lead poisoning, toys containing magnets that could cause intestinal damage and even toys containing a "date rape" drug that left several children in comas for hours were pulled from store shelves.
