United Steelworkers Releases Results of Study on Toxic Trade Fatalities
Wednesday, July 09, 2008

The United Steelworkers will release the results of study showing exactly how toxic trade kills unsuspecting American consumers during a teleconference call Wednesday, July 9, at 10:15 a.m.

The victims include a four-year-old who died after swallowing an imported lead pendant that was attached to his shoe; two Philadelphia carpenters whose van crashed while they were traveling home from work on defective tires manufactured in China, and 81 patients poisoned across the country from contaminated heparin, a blood thinner imported from China.

These deaths and other injuries to consumers, workers, the environment, security and communities are detailed in the report, "The Toxic Truth: Unfair Trade Kills," by the United Steelworkers to be released at the teleconference Wednesday.

The report will be available Wednesday on the Steelworkers' web site, USW.org.

What: teleconference to release "The Toxic Truth: Unfair Trade Kills" simultaneous to Bush administration's Import Safety Summit at which industry groups are meeting in Washington, D.C. to discuss voluntary actions by industry to deal with problems rather than imposition of government standards, restrictions and inspections to ensure safety.

When: Wednesday, July 9 at 10:15 a.m. ET

Who: Linda Andros, United Steelworkers Legislative Representative and trade attorney; Marilyn Furer, the Midwestern grandmother who alerted the country to the fact that imported vinyl baby bibs contained lead, and Red Blake, the health and safety coordinator for the USW local at the Goodyear plant in Tyler Texas being closed because of unfair competition from low-cost imports.

How: To participate in the call, dial (800) 762-4905 or from outside the U.S. call, (480) 629-9035. The access code is 953394.

A recording of the call may be heard at 12:15 by calling 800-475-6701 or from outside the U.S. 320-365-3844. The access code is 953394. A recording of the call also will be posted on the USW web site later this week at USW.org. A recording of the call will also be available on the Steelworker web site later in the week.
